Accessories for You!

Here are a few guidelines to make your selections easier:
Style: Choose two items to represent the style limits of your collection (especially when it will be seen as a group as in a bookshelf.) and then keep all other selections within these two. example: A granite and brass banded decorative ball and a moderately expensive swan sculpture. The ball represents the limits of funkiness and trends. The swan limits femininity and sweetness. A glass and ivory porcelain bowl would fit in the group. A collector's figurine of a child and an inexpensive iron candle holder would not.
Size: (for groupings_ Establish the tallest, shortest, and widest size appropriate for the area you are decorating. (Be sure to measure the depth of mantles and shelves.) Think in terms of rectangles, tall and wide, circles, and triangles. Vary your purchases to reflect these general shapes.
For shelves have about equal numbers of each shape. For table, typically use a tall and short on the same table.
Color: Which color within your fabric color scheme needs to be enhanced? buy at least one accessory in that color.
Is your existing color scheme working hard enough? We have all seen magazine photographs containing fresh flowers which match nothing. They bring life beyond the existing color palette. If your room needs this approach, consider which colors will bring that sort of freshness and pop.
In projects such as the bookshelf also choose color limits and stay within the range you have selected. For instance, a vibrant palette would not accommodate a pastel piece. You may have many shades of a color or a specific shade, but do not have one lone cousin waving hello from your bookshelf.
General plan of attack: Remove all accessories from your table tops and place them on a large table in a central place. Begin placing them where they look best. Clusters of three will work easiest for coffee tables and end tables, but complicated groupings on shelves look excellent. Be sure to leave empty space for the eye to rest. Any items which don't enhance the room should not be used. Empty space is often better than creating a look that is less than pleasing. Make a list of any accessories needed to finish your task and then buy selectively.
For maximum impact, buy accessories of similar monetary value and repeat color and style themes so that you create layers of harmony!
